Restoration Hardware inks lease deal for former Louis building in Back Bay

Restoration Hardware has signed a lease at the former LouisBoston building on Berkeley Street in Back Bay, the one-time home to the New England Museum of Natural History.

The 40,000-square-foot space that spans three floors will be restored to its original glory in honor of the building’s unique history, cultural significance and singular place in Boston’s urban landscape, according to S.R. Weiner & Associates and WS Development, the building’s owners. The pending deal was first reported by the Herald in July.

Located between Boylston and Newbury streets, the marquee building’s neoclassical façade fronts Berkeley Street and was designed in the French Academic style by architect William G. Preston in 1863. He also designed the former Hotel Vendome.

Restoration Hardware’s gallery at 234 Berkeley St. will express “new and evolving ways of designing the home, and will serve as a showcase for the company’s extensive Home and Outdoor & Garden Collections,” the company said.

“We are delighted that Restoration Hardware will create an extraordinary destination in an extraordinary building on an extraordinary street,” said Mayor Thomas M. Menino in a statement.
